About the Conference
International Conference on Education in Muslim Society (ICEMS)
Learning is an essential part of Muslims’ lives. Since the very beginning of the revelation, Islam has thought the believers to continue their efforts in improving their quality of lives through reading, observing, experimenting and story-telling. It is all stated clearly in the Quran and the tradition of the Prophet. This is to say that education has a very solid foundation in Islam, and hence it is the role of the Muslim societies around the world to exemplify Islamic ethos in education.
The strong foundation of education Islam cannot only be seen from the normative arguments based on the Islamic texts, history also tells that in the medieval era Muslim scholars contributed significantly to the development of knowledge and science. Scholars such as Ibn Sina, Ibn Rushd, Ibn Khaldun, Al-Ghazaly, Al-Khawarizmy, and so many others had been known for their research and works on various academic discipline. In fact, their intellectual works remain influential to today’s world.
Fakultas Ilmu Tarbiyah dan Keguruan (the Faculty of Education) UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta maintains its position as an education institution that prepares young generations to become educators in various fields of knowledge and science. The Faculty has big interests in continuing the discussion about science and knowledge in the Muslim world. The discussion is not only how we can best serve Muslim students to learn in schools, but more importantly how Muslim scholars can offer their contributions to education, knowledge and science in today’s and tomorrow’s world.
It is under the above light, the Faculty of Education UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta initiated a conference that brings together scholars from around the world to expose their experiences in education and discuss future possibilities of the advancement of education. Started in 2014, the International Conference on Education in Muslim society is aimed to gather scholars, researchers and practitioners of education to exchange knowledge, experiences and ideas regarding education in the world.
The conference is expected to produce publications in the means of internationally recognized proceedings, articles in academic journals and recommendation for various stakeholders of education. Through these efforts the conference will not only beneficial to its participants, but also to others. The participants do not only get their benefits through live discussion and academic interactions with other scholars, but they also have the opportunity to receive feedbacks form other scholars concerning their academic works. When the works are available for publication, more people will get benefits from the published works.
The Faculty of Education UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta is optimistic that the conference will be only growing and continues to offer valuable recommendations to scholars, practitioners and education authorities, in Muslim societies and around the world.
